As someone who looks at social media for my job I have seen my fair share of an Instagram bio. I have seen everything from “coffee lover, pet enthusiast, wife, brother” to a smattering of random emojis. “Cool, Jenni. I’m glad you’re really into your hairless sphinx kitten. What exactly do you do for a living?”

Here are a few changes you can incorporate in your bio as you are decided to use it to promote your business.

  1. Say what you do. Sound too simple? Far too many people try to be overly cute or creative when saying what they do for a living. Don’t tell me “you are an organizer of a high end experience.”. Just say “event planner”. You only have a certain amount of real estate in that bio. Use it wisely! Save the story telling and creativity for your posts
  2. List what problem you solve. Again don’t make the language flowery and confusing. Keep it simple. If you are a meal prep service say, “I cook your dinner so that you don’t have to.”. Obvious, clear, and to the point.
  3. List a way for people to contact you. Email, phone number, address. Whatever you prefer. If you have a product or service people will most likely have questions and will want to reach you.

So there you go! Three quick and easy things you can do RIGHT NOW to up your Instagram  bio game and to clearly send the message of what you do to your ideal client.

Schedule Instagram Stories

How can you use stories for your business? Sometimes there are things that you do that maybe don’t fall into the right kind of content category you are wanting to post for your client. Maybe you are going to a nice lunch. Maybe you are on vacation. Maybe you are pushing yourself to do something you’ve never done before. I believe that it’s important to show these sides of yourself. Plus it kind of acts like a little vlog in real time. We live in an age where people like to take a look into the lives of the people they follow or find interesting. Instagram stories allows you to do that without making your feed look too haphazard. So try it out! Integrate both business and personal and see what kind of feedback you get. Happy posting!

Time Management Tips For Work

I heard someone say one time, in a conversation about time management, that everybody has the same 24 hours in a day so you can’t say the reason someone else can do something you haven’t is because of time. I mean Beyonce didn’t become “Beyonce” because she was trying to kill time. So here are few tips from Beyonce herself to make more time for you business. Ok, maybe she didn’t say it, but I bet she wouldn’t argue!

First, give up 1 hour of unintentional pass times. Do you ever find yourself mindlessly scrolling through Instagram? What about Facebook? I’m going to rat myself out here for a second. One time I had to laugh (and scoff) at myself because I realized that I was ACTIVELY scrolling through Facebook both on my phone AND on my computer because I was seeing different content on both feeds. Friends, thats the moment when you have to drop everything and WALK AWAY!

Secondly, stop watching Netflix. Ok, maybe not all together, but if you’re like me you will find yourself elbow deep in a bag of chips while you’re on your 37th episode of Friends if you’re not careful. Set a 30 minute to one hour timer on your phone and when it goes off, turn off the show!

Third, PLAN your tasks. I, like most people these days, get extremely ADD.
I will hop back and forth between a million different things. Doing everything and getting nothing done. Something I like to do, as nerdy as it sounds, is create a spreadsheet with my schedule. Yup! If you plan something and set it in stone then that friend who wants you to help them move or your Aunt Debbie who likes to chat about what happened on the Real Housewives this week for an hour and a half can’t interrupt you. “Sorry Debbie, it’s not in the schedule for today.”

Creating these little changes in your day is going to significantly change the amount of time you waste. I promise!

How to shoot without a Studio

Several years ago I was SO poor that I couldn’t even rent out a room for $50 for a studio space. What’s funny is that I actually had a full time job at the time. The reality is that I probably could have afforded it.

Recently I heard someone say that there is a difference between being poor and being broke. They continued on to say that being broke meant you have no money. Being poor, he explained, is a mindset. You spend too much. You THINK you don’t have any money. Being poor is more about how you think about everything. If you disagree I totally understand. I think in this analogy it’s less about the words and more about the difference between the mind and the bank account.

That being said I wasn’t willing to see the investment of a studio rental so I did my fair share of photoshoots in my apartment at the time. It was a one bedroom apartment and just to give you a feel for the place it would take maintenance days to “fix” my air conditioning every summer which never was truly fixed, I could hear music blaring from the people on the ground level (I lived on the third floor), and about a month after I moved out the sewer line broke and flooded the parking lot I used to park in. Needless to say, it wasn’t ideal.

If you want it badly enough you make it work. Luckily most of the people I photographed were people I knew, except for one guy I had to photograph who was a complete stranger. I’m sure he was thinking to himself “What did I get myself into?” or worse “Am I going to make it out of here alive?”

Just to give you a bit of a visual here’s an overview of the room I shot in.

Yup! Literally smack dab between my couch and the front door my subject would sit in front of my sloppily painted walls. I did it though you guys! I learned. I figured out how to, under the least pleasant of circumstances, shoot great photos in this in this place. So now I will show my gratitude. My gratitude for my flooded, noisy, messy, tiny, sauna of an apartment for teaching me how to depend on my skill and my heart rather than my surroundings. Below are some of the images I created.

What to wear for your headshot

Are you asking yourself what to wear for your photoshoot?

This is probably the most common question I am asked when I have someone who has just booked a photoshoot with me. My first answer to this question when people ask me is that more is better.  If you show up with only one or two outfits that is your only option when it comes to your headshot, web site, or social media content.  If you are wanting content that will last you a significant amount of time you want different options so that you aren’t posting photos that look too similar.  Regardless of whether or not you shoot different photos in different poses if you are wearing the exact same outfit in every photo people’s brain will tell them they are just seeing the same photo.

My first advice is to talk to someone in the fashion industry.  You may be able to find your answers online.  You could also look for a personal shopper or an image consultant.  Yes, they exist.  I even know one personally if you need a recommendation!

Another thing you may want to consider is where your photos will be posted.  A headshot that may have a great response on Facebook or Instagram may not have the same positive response as Linkedin.

Above all when choosing your outfit for your photoshoot make sure that it reflects who you are as a person or business.  If the outfits you choose are not something you would ever wear and are uncomfortable in people will know.  If you are not comfortable when neither will your potential client be when hiring you!
