PR Strategies for Startups

I was getting frustrated. I was feeling overwhelmed. How am I supposed to do this? How am I supposed to post to Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, have a newsletter, and a blog? I AM ONLY ONE PERSON! After I had a brief freak out moment I took a breath. I looked out the window and I thought about it. Every big company out there has their own PR firm and marketing department. That’s when it hit me. I AM my own PR and marketing department. What I am posting is my business. So I decided to stop hating social media and I decided to started to think of myself as my own company. This sounds slightly ridiculous because I am my own business and my own brand so this should be obvious. I got overwhelmed though and I forgot to think of myself as a professional. It was as if I only thought of myself as a professional when I was doing a photoshoot or networking event. When I was at home creating content I forgot. So for any of you that work from home or own your own business and just plain get overwhelmed, this is my reminder for you. Breathe. Don’t freak out. Now remind yourself that you are the most super rad business owner and start to show up for your business. It is the best thing you can do for yourself!

Best Instagram Growth Service

Instagram Growth Services are one of the most popular services right now. I have done a lot of research and have found pros and cons to these services. First of all I completely understand the draw to such a service. For those of us using Instagram to grow our businesses or to sell our products we are drawn to getting it in front of as large of an audience as possible.

First of all lets talk about the pros to these services. A lot of these services will do exactly what they say. They will grow your audience. You may even see quite the spike in your numbers. There are statistics that show that only a small percentage of your audience will purchase your product or sign up for your mailing list. So statistically the larger the audience you have the larger your sales will grow.

Now for the cons. Here is what I’ve found. A lot of these services will follow the follow for follow tactic. Meaning the software will follow pages that are similar to your interests in hope that they will follow you back. Then after a few days the software will unfollow the accounts

Organically Grow Your Instagram in 2019

How do i grow my Instagram account organically? I feel like it’s one of the most commonly asked questions i see and hear in the social media realm.
Here are my 3 tips for growing your account organically

  1. Post every day. Is it work? Yes. If you are using your account for business then the work is SO work it.
  2. Use hashtags that have been used between 2k and 200k times. If a hashtag has been used too little no one will see your content. If a hashtag has been used too much though as soon as you post you’ll get lost in the millions of other posts.
  3. Leave genuine comments on other people’s content. If you want people to engage with your content then show others the same courtesy and interact with their accounts!

Follow these few steps and start to watch your following grow!

Showing Up When you Only Have a Sale

Have you ever decided to blow up your social media because you are having a sale and you need more business?

Listen, I’ve done it too. I have thought to myself “Business has been slow and I could use some extra cash so I might as well have a sale. If people see that I’m having a sale then they will buy a bunch of stuff!”

I’m going to tell you as a friend….IT DOESN’T WORK!

Can you imagine if you had a friend that you never heard from, that you never hung out with, and that you never talked to, but then all of a sudden when they were having a sale they started blowing up your phone like you are best buds? It feels gross. It’s because people can sniff out if you are being disingenuous.

Show up for your business even when you are not having a sale. Give value without expectation. Maybe someone will buy from you, but people will respect you so much more and be willing to refer to you if you are constantly giving of yourself.

How Businesses Use Social Media for Marketing

Let’s be honest it can feel like it’s own separate job to manage your social media. I mean it’s hard enough just trying to manage your business alone let alone constantly posting. Trust me! I get it! I run into this regularly in my own business and this is basically an extension of my business anyway!. I wanted to give you a few tricks that I use on a regular basis when it comes to managing my social media so that it doesn’t feel quite so daunting.

I like to use a couple different services. The first one is called Trello. I feel like Trello was MADE just for Me! It is so helpful with the way my brain works. How it works is you can make different boards. Imagine a “To do” list, “Being done” list, and “Done” list. Under each list you can create separate “cards”. On each one of these cards I write my social media posts. Once I write the posts I can drag and drop the card into the “Being Done” list. Once I post it I can drag and drop the card into the “Done” list.

The next platform I use is called Planoly for Instagram. In Planoly you are able to upload all the photos that you want to post and organize them how you would like. If you click on the photo you can add content just like you were creating an instagram post. Now my FAVORITE part about Planoly is that you can schedule your posts. This way I can plan Instagram posts for the week or even the whole month if I want to! This significantly cuts down on the “I don’t know what to post today feeling.

I like to do the same thing with the Facebook scheduler. Something that Facebook has so lovingly integrated into their platform already!

I hope this helps you with that overwhelmed feeling you get when thinking about uploading your social media content.

How to make time for everything

I heard someone say one time that everybody has the same 24 hours in a day so you can’t say the reason someone else can do something you haven’t is because of time. I mean Beyonce didn’t become “Beyonce” because she was trying to kill time. So here are few tips from Beyonce herself to make more time for you business. Ok, maybe she didn’t say it, but I bet she wouldn’t argue!

First, give up 1 hour of unintentional pass times. Do you ever find yourself mindlessly scrolling through Instagram? What about Facebook? I’m going to rat myself out here for a second. One time I had to laugh (and scoff) at myself because I realized that I was ACTIVELY scrolling through Facebook both on my phone AND on my computer because I was seeing different content on both feeds. Friends, thats the moment when you have to drop everything and WALK AWAY!

Secondly, stop watching Netflix. Ok, maybe not all together, but if you’re like me you will find yourself elbow deep in a bag of chips while you’re on your 37th episode of Friends if you’re not careful. Set a 30 minute to one hour timer on your phone and when it goes off, turn off the show!

Third, PLAN your tasks. I, like most people these days, get extremely ADD.
I will hop back and forth between a million different things. Doing everything and getting nothing done. Something I like to do, as nerdy as it sounds, is create a spreadsheet with my schedule. Yup! If you plan something and set it in stone then that friend who wants you to help them move or your Aunt Debbie who likes to chat about what happened on the Real Housewives this week for an hour and a half can’t interrupt you. “Sorry Debbie, it’s not in the schedule for today.”

Creating these little changes in your day is going to significantly change the amount of time you waste. I promise!

3 Ways to Book New Clients

Let’s be honest. We all want new clients. Am I right or am I right? Just a little hint, I’m right. 😉 The ongoing age old question though is how do we get new clients? There was a time, not long enough ago, that I would sit at home feeling real sorry for myself because I wasn’t getting new clients. It was a real sad sack, party for one. I would drown my sorrows in a pizza and a pint of ice cream. Throw in a $3 bottle of wine from Aldi, because you know we broke, and you got a full on pity party.

NO MORE! This does no one any good. Guess what my friend? As a business owner, you have something to offer. End of story. So if you’re up in your living room face first in a party pizza, no one is listening to you. Because you are not saying anything! Start talking! Let’s get real. If you’re at a party and the person you are standing next to is crying and feeling sorry for themselves or worse, not talking at all, what would you do? Probably turn around and walk away. The same goes in business.

Here are a few ways I recommend trying to attract some new clients

  1. Ask someone you know really well and trust to give you a warm introduction to someone you’d like to meet. I do this all the time. Whether its a group text or a group Facebook message. Having someone you both like and trust makes this introduction a little less forced and awkward.
  2. Start showing up. One thing you never want to see is an Instagram or Facebook page that is barren. Potential consumers equate this as “no content=no business”. You do not want this! So show up! Talk about your business. Talk about life. Show the behind the scenes of your business. Keep it real and keep it light!
  3. Start DM’ing people. Don’t make it spammy or awkward. Show them that you are a real person with something valuable to offer. Always reference something on their account too that you saw. This will prove to them that you are a real person. Not to mention it will show that you actually cared enough to look at their content!

So wipe that pizza sauce off your face and start the conversation! Even if it’s feels uncomfortable at first. You got this! I know it!

Entrepreneur Instagram Bio

instagram bios for business

As someone who looks at social media for my job I have seen my fair share of an Instagram bio. I have seen everything from “coffee lover, pet enthusiast, wife, brother” to a smattering of random emojis. “Cool, Jenni. I’m glad you’re really into your hairless sphinx kitten. What exactly do you do for a living?”

Here are a few changes you can incorporate in your bio as you are decided to use it to promote your business.

  1. Say what you do. Sound too simple? Far too many people try to be overly cute or creative when saying what they do for a living. Don’t tell me “you are an organizer of a high end experience.”. Just say “event planner”. You only have a certain amount of real estate in that bio. Use it wisely! Save the story telling and creativity for your posts
  2. List what problem you solve. Again don’t make the language flowery and confusing. Keep it simple. If you are a meal prep service say, “I cook your dinner so that you don’t have to.”. Obvious, clear, and to the point.
  3. List a way for people to contact you. Email, phone number, address. Whatever you prefer. If you have a product or service people will most likely have questions and will want to reach you.

So there you go! Three quick and easy things you can do RIGHT NOW to up your Instagram  bio game and to clearly send the message of what you do to your ideal client.

What are you waiting for? Go change it! NOW!

Schedule Instagram Stories

How can you use stories for your business? Sometimes there are things that you do that maybe don’t fall into the right kind of content category you are wanting to post for your client. Maybe you are going to a nice lunch. Maybe you are on vacation. Maybe you are pushing yourself to do something you’ve never done before. I believe that it’s important to show these sides of yourself. Plus it kind of acts like a little vlog in real time. We live in an age where people like to take a look into the lives of the people they follow or find interesting. Instagram stories allows you to do that without making your feed look too haphazard. So try it out! Integrate both business and personal and see what kind of feedback you get. Happy posting!
